Blog #7 Cause and Effect

In my experience my appearance effects a lot of people. Some people may see how tall I am and instantly be intimidated by me. They think that I am a bad guy or someone that is going to hurt them at any moment in time. The simple truth is that it is hard for me to ever imagine hurting someone, I do not think that I would intentionally do that. I do not even want to destroy someones confidence by being rude to them. I have also seen how I have thought of people differently because of appearance. You will see someone with a black hoodie on and black pants and people are sometimes instantly afraid that they are a mugger, a gangster, or someone that will do harm. The simple truth could be that they were cold. 

With the example of the 9/11 attacks, the effect is that there are some people that will never look at Muslims the same again. There are people that will not see them as who they are but think of what had happened and think that everyone in their religion will do that. This has made an effect that has changed peoples minds forever. The appearance of some can have a big change on peoples minds, but it doesn't mean that it should be that way. We can learn to not look at the appearance and judge or judge from the little bit of knowledge that we have but for some it may take time to learn. 

Blog Post #5 Writing in your Journal, from Shoot To Kill

Question: Do you think that the families of Columbine victims should sue Jefferson County? Give the reasons for your view in a page or so.

I do not think that the families of Columbine should sue Jefferson County. The policemen of that town were doing everything that they were taught to do in that situation. They were taught to be as safe as possible and to not put any other people in danger, whether it be the students, terrorist/people shooting, or even themselves. That was the first time that something like that had happened to any school and it was a learning experience. That doesn't mean that it is okay for that to happen, but with it being the first case there was no reason to prepare for it. 

I firmly believe that if the officers would have known that something like that would have happened that they would have changed how they acted. They would have saved lives and help a lot more people. I cannot see anyone going there and not acting when they should. I know I would have if i was there and knew what was going on. The parents may be sad but not even the parents thought that that would happen to their students. 

Blog # 2

I enjoyed Chapters 4 and 5, it seemed like a way for me to better my writing or give good criticism in a constructive way. The examples of Paraphrasing, Summary, and quotation are good ways for me to respond to questions or explain to someone what the reading was about. I also liked the questions on page 99, Would I recommend it to others? why or why not? which features help the writer achieve their goal? What features hinder its progress? And there were more.
In chapter 5 it explains how to have better descriptions and how they effect your writing. It explains how to improve your descriptions and that they can either be the primary pattern or the secondary pattern in order for you the achieve your writing purpose. I learned what the dominant expression was and I have never thought of it like that even though it is kind of obvious. That we should write only the details that add to the impression we are trying to make, have it focused.
I learned a lot from these chapters, I guess the thing that they could have added was a few examples of how not to do it just to make sure that it was clarified.

Blog #6 Compare and Contrast

This article was a lot different then I originally thought it would be. I did not think that it would be about the Spaniard influence on the Hispanics in this part of the world. The differences that I knew of before were just what I have seen growing up and from an LDS mission. 

I have seen how many Hispanics, mostly from Mexico and from Central America, were would come to the United states for a better opportunity, would come too have a better future and help those they loved in their home country. I noticed that they were generally are more passionate and firm in their way of life then the Americans that I know. The ones I knew were very hard workers, and would rarely be home because of it. 

The essay spoke of the Spaniards and how their culture was when they first came to the Americas. It basically saying that the anglos would come here and till their own land, use their horses to work and were in a humble state. The Spaniards would never till their own land, they would pay Native Americans to do it. They also would only use their horses to ride, never to work because they liked the height and the feel of superiority. These circumstances could be because when the Anglos first came to America from their home lands, they were here for freedom and personal rights, and were ready to work hard on that land. It seems to me that the Spaniards first came here for conquest, for Gold and for glory. They worked hard but the different mind set made things a lot different.

In general in my experience I have seen it kind of backwards from this article, speaking of today and our age. I am only referring too the Americans and the Mexican/Central American populations. But there are still things in this article that I have seen and not thought of before. Such as there being no way to apologize in Spanish. I always thought that was weird but I now understand why it is that way. 

This has changed my view of the Hispanic Culture and Anglo culture. Now I will have to observe this for myself and see if i agree with the reading.
